Abstract
Adam Smith, in the 18th century, affirmed that to found a great empire was a fit project for a nation that is governed by shopkeepers. It can be forgotten by those who spend their lives in service to their fellow men, that all prosperity depends on trade. “In trade” was a rather derogatory term in the 18th century, used by those unfamiliar with the expertises of the business fraternity. Are profit and the profit motive incompatible with compassion, care, and ministration to the sick and dying—if that is what health care is?
