Abstract
Market economy has brought novelty in the global market. At the same time, market deceptions have become the order of the day. Consumers are being exploited in many a number of ways. Of course, exploitation of consumers by manufacturers and traders is not a new thing. However, these exploitations have pressurized the consumers to organize leading to the consumer movement. This movement is to protect against the continued unscrupulous and unfair business practices by the business community disregarding their ethical responsibility to protect the interests of their customers. Consumer protection legislations enacted by the Indian government to protect the interest of helpless and unwary consumers have been milestones in the consumer protection and welfare. In this background, this paper makes an attempt to analyze the role of consumer protection legislations in pressurizing the business community to act ethically in market places.
