Abstract

Abstract Canada is regarded as having one of the best food safety and risk assessment systems in the world. Canadian consumers report high confidence levels in the safety of their food and in the effectiveness of the food safety system. However, although trust in the food safety and risk assessment systems is high, many consumers admit to being skeptical of some aspects of the systems. To determine what areas of Canada’s food safety system could be improved, an assessment of consumer perceptions was conducted through an online survey. Results show Canadians are mostly satisfied with the food safety system and trust the organizations involved, but have concerns about public communication of food risks and a lack of overall transparency.
