Abstract

Family medicine is based on a holistic approach to medicine which overlaps with that of psychiatry. Psychosomatic medicine represents the common ground between the two disciplines and is typified by consultation-liaison psychiatry. With the predicted shortage of psychiatrists and the high prevalence of mental disorders, the relationship between psychiatry and family medicine is increasingly important. This paper reviews the definition and principles of family medicine and consultation-liaison psychiatry and describes a specific example of a mutually beneficial relationship.
