Nevertheless, there does not appear to be a standard method of carrying out this procedure, and techniques of uptake measurements differ widely from country to country; consequently, the results obtained are difficult to compare with one another and are often of doubtful value.The International Atomic Energy Agency is undertaking a project to assist its Member States in the calibration and standardisation of thyroid radioiodine uptake measurements. The project involves the dispatch of an expert on this subject to a Member State requesting such service. Using a dummy figure containing known amounts of “mock” radioactive iodine, he calibrates existing local apparatus for uptake measurements, calculates correction factors where necessary, and suggests a standardised procedure so as to ensure that the results obtained are comparable with those reached at institutions in other countries. It is hoped that in this way, confidence in published results will be increased and the comparison of the geographical variation in thyroid function will be provided with a sounder basis.Before starting the project, it was felt that the Agency should seek the advice of a number of well-known specialists in this field on a method of measurement which would facilitate such an intercomparison, would be reasonably accurate and could be used even under rather primitive conditions.
