Recruitment and retention of midwives is a particularly worrying issue and, as anyone who participated in the Midwives' Lobby of Parliament on the 21st October will realise, pay and conditions of employment are high on the agenda. However, at a time when the idea of Clinical Governance is being widely discussed, the Prime Minister has floated the idea of the Consultant Nurse and the Royal College of Midwives has circulated a questionnaire on this latter topic, the issue I want to talk about is that of standards -- in particular basic standards of midwifery care.
