Abstract
AbstractThe science of geography is at a turning point, marking the passage from the traditional, descriptive stage to a new constructive and transformative stage. The aim of the new constructive geography is to provide the theoretical basis and practical recommendations for man's transformation of the environment for the benefit of society. Examples of constructive research conducted by the Institute of Geography (Moscow) are found in work on the geophysics of natural landscapes of the wooded steppe, designed to improve agricultural productivity; transformation of the hydrologic cycle of Central Asia to provide more water for irrigation; and transformation of the drainage systems of Western Siberia to reduce swampiness and open up the area for economic development based on newly discovered oil and gas. Constructive geography needs a general theory in which both the particular geographic disciplines and an improved landscape science can play a role.
