Abstract

This paper presents a partial account of a systemic - functional semiotics of action and applies it to an analysis of a Michael Jackson video clip, Jam . Two action patterns are identified in Jam : phases and foregrounding. The phases chart the development of the action in the video, and foregrounding forms the basis of an interpretation in terms of themes having to do with construction of identity. An effort is made to make explicit the interpretive process in the manner of reader - oriented theories.
