Abstract

General-Services-Administration-sponsored field studies of construction noise and traffic noise around site produce comparisons of interest to drafters of community noise management ordinances, to public agencies establishing construction noise criteria, and to construction workers. Construction noise limits should be established in relationship with background ambient noise levels. G.S.A. controls should be expanded to include noise produced by hand activity, to differentiate between outdoor and indoor environments, and to establish more appropriate measurement criteria. Construction noise management requires preplanning to establish achievable goals by a team including representatives of all concerned disciplines and a sound consultant. Construction noise generally represents greater hazard for construction workers than for the community.
