Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the many technological faults evident in the housing stock of a mining town in North Western Australia. The research programme, of which this paper is a part, includes a brief to draw up recommendations for the restoration and making good of constructional defects with the aim of reducing recurrent maintenance costs. Defects such as those described can be attributed mostly to a lack of awareness of the problems associated with building in hot dry regions and to the inappropriateness of the finished building to the lifestyle of its occupants.
