Abstract
Construction is a physically demanding process, which can be mitigated during design, procurement, and construction. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among Construction Health and Safety Agents (CHSAs) due to their legislated role during design, procurement, and construction, to determine, among others, their perceptions and practices relative to construction ergonomics. Construction ergonomics is less important than end-user ergonomics, CHSAs influence construction ergonomics mostly during ‘design development’, and hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) predominates in terms of the potential of various factors to contribute to an improvement in construction ergonomics. CHSAs are appointed at various stages, CHSAs influence construction ergonomics more so during the mid to downstream stages, and there is potential to improve construction ergonomics throughout the phases of projects. CHSAs should be appointed at stage 1 of projects, and design HIRA should feature prominently during the early stages of projects.
