Abstract

The crp gene encodes cAMP receptor protein (CRP), which is an important regulator of nutrient metabolism in bacteria. In this study, we constructed a crp mutant of Pasteurella multocida isolated from chickens. Virulence tests showed that the crp mutant was highly attenuated when compared with its parental wildtype strain. Chickens immunized with ≥10^8 CFU of the crp mutant were completely protected against challenge with its parental strain and strain X-73. The crp gene of P. multocida is a good target for constructing an attenuated strain and the crp mutant of P. multocida has the potential to serve as a live-attenuated vaccine strain for the control of P. multocida infection.
