Abstract

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA), as an age-related and disabling joint disease characterized by progressive heterogeneous changes in articular cartilage, subchondral bone, osteophyte formation, has apparently affected 9.6% of males and 18% of females over 60 years old from symptomatic OA, approximately 237 million patients globally. The abnormal expression of mRNA drives an imbalance between catabolic and anabolic factors into osteoarthritic cartilage degeneration. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs of 21-24 nucleotides in length that are widely expressed in eukaryotes and involved in OA progression by regulating the expression of specific targeted genes.
