Abstract

The usefulness of problem solving in the teaching of elementary mathematics has been long established. In recent years, a considerable effort has been performed toward the method of try it and find out. In this paper we present a combinatorial problem proposed in a third year class of the Secondary State School that illustrates the value of this method.
