Abstract

Given the context of the reading situation in Chile, and the lack of reliable assessments of reading, especially of the early stages, this study aims to validate a computer-based test of early literacy skills. The sample included 527 children stratified by gender, socioeconomic level and grade, from 3 schools located in the metropolitan region of Santiago. The participants were evaluated by ABCDeti, CLP and SEPA-SEP tests, and categorized according to their reading performance by the teacher s criteria. The results show that the test has a Cronbach alpha of .961 and acceptable reliability indicators for relevant dimensions and grade levels. We found a moderate correlation with the test-SEPA-SEP (r =. 447), and evidence of consistent discrimination with the teacher s assessment of reading performance. The factorial structure by grade level is appropriate and consistent with the empirical evidence. Overall, the evidence presented supports the validity and reliability of the ABCDeti test and suggest it is a robust instrument for the assessment of reading skills from Pre-Kinder to fourth grade.
