Abstract

This paper offers an Optimality Theoretic account to three variations in Mandarin tone sandhi that are conditioned by speech rate differences, the Adagio reading, the Moderato reading, and the Presto reading. It is demonstrated that the variations in Mandarin tone sandhi can be accounted for by a limited number of differences in the ranking of the same sets of universal constraints.
