Abstract

Two‐step sintering was applied to yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes screen‐printed on primed porous prefired substrates. The YSZ layers were sintered at a range of peak and dwell temperatures. Relative density values from 0.79 to 0.97 corresponded to grain sizes ranging from 0.6 to 10 μm, indicating that grain growth was not suppressed when applying these profiles to a constrained system. However, two of the samples sintered using the two‐step technique had a lower gas permeance compared with conventional samples. As the more successful two‐step profiles had lower peak temperatures than the conventional profile, this approach may provide other benefits.
