Abstract

In the chemi-thermo-mechanical pulping (CTMP) process, refiners used to convert wood chips to pulp are keyelements in determining the final physical and papermaking properties of pulp. This paper presents the design of a constrained niultivariable adaptive controller for a wood chip refiner. The control objective is to maintain two output variables, refiner motor load and blow-line consistency at their set points by adjusting three manipulated variables, transfer screw speed, refiner hydraulic pressure and dilution flow rate. The control algorithm is based on Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) with consideration for the constraints on process input variables. Computer simulations are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed control algorithm.
