Abstract

The break-up of a planar solid-liquid interface into a cellular or a dendritic interface under directional solidification conditions is examined. Experimental results on the effect of composition on the dendrite tip radius, primary dendrite spacing and secondary dendrite spacing are presented for the growth of succinonitrile dendrites from succinonitrile-acetone solutions. These results, combined with the existing data in the literature, are compared with theoretical models to assess our current understanding of the dendritic growth process.
