Abstract

On July 28, 1857, the Oregon Statesman published an editorial written by George H. Williams, a delegate to the Oregon Constitutional Convention and Chief Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court, that made powerful arguments for rejecting Oregon as a slave state — to preserve the region as a White utopia.
