Abstract

The BMW i3-machine is being considered as a representative automotive electric machine for bringing innovations within the automotive industry to aviation applications. Herein an existing Ansys Motor-CAD model of the BMW-i3 interior permanent magnet machine is leveraged in order to determine the constant torque as well as maximum torque per amp (MTPA) operating points of the machine. Specifically, the domain of data is cleverly reduced to two-dimensions, albeit at the potential cost of neglecting the effect of possible torque ripple. This enables a reasonable computation time of the model for the breadth of data required. Furthermore, a quadratic curve fit is provided to aid in the rapid development of MTPA controls to support future investigation of this machine.
