Abstract

This article reviews the most commonly used continuous rate infusions (CRIs) in veterinary medicine to provide sedation and analgesia during the peri-operative period. Providing a drug as a CRI allows maintenance of a stable plasma level of the drug, avoiding the ‘peaks and troughs’ associated with repeated bolus administration. Basic pharmacokinetics of drugs suitable for peri-operative CRI administration is described. Each drug is then briefly reviewed together with its properties and side effects. Combinations of CRI and novel concepts are described, followed by some examples on calculations for CRI.
