Abstract

Abstract. — This paper is a method study based on a representative sample of phone users and an analysis of the distribution of phone use among households, services and industrial businesses, taking into account criteria of sub-regional differentiation. Socio-professional status is the key factor when studying the level of equipment and telephone use in households. It is even more apparent when it cornes to professional and inter-cities calls from private homes. The household structure and the date of subscription must also be taken into account. The size, the economic sector and the hierarchical level of businesses served as a basis for an analysis on the regional and standardised sub-regional level. The study showed the interest and the limits of the findings gathered from the study of a régional sample. It also showed what could bring an improved knowledge of consumption structures at regional level, and the need to improve the method of acquisition of socio-economic data necessary to understand these structures.
