Abstract

Rats of the Maudsley Strains were trained in the Hebb-Williams' maze for 10 consecutive days. A retention test was given after 30 days. Four groups of animals were injected with either nicotine, picrotoxin, pentobarbital sodium or distilled water. One control group received only a dry needle and the other group was not injected but was handled in the same way as others. Nicotine and picrotoxin was shown to enhance learning and retention while pentobarbital depressed it. Results suggest that injected groups perform better than the non-injected group.
