Abstract

The Levallois technique characterizes particularly the Middle Paleolithic and essentially consists in the minute preparation of the core, so that the products achieved by this kind of debitage have a predetermined form. The Levallois debitage was defined in 1961 by F. Bordes, and since then numerous studies have been achieved concerning this kind of debitage. The analysis of the Levallois technique in time has proved its complexity, as well as the difficulty of interpreting the lithic clusters achieved by means of a Levallois debitage. In Romania the existence of this type of debitage has been identified, though no complex studies concerning the Levallois have been undertaken so far. The presence of the Levallois debitage in Romania is more significant in the open air settlements of the Middle Paleolithic and less obvious in the Carpathian Musterian.
