Abstract

ABSTRACT In this paper, the work of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan is examined with regard to career counselling. Lacan argued that the individual exists as the split subject engaged in a futile search to fill an inner void via the pursuit of a particular object. In this paper I will explore a number of Lacan's key concepts (Imaginary, Symbolic, Real, Lack, “objet petit a” and Jouissance). Next, I discuss Lacan in relation to career theory in general, followed by the presentation of a case study in which I attempt to elucidate some Lacanian concepts in a practical setting.
