Abstract

Obesity is rapidly becoming a major health issue, putting a significant drain on NHS resources and the economy through direct medical and social care costs and loss of productivity. Significant attempts to address obesity through lifestyle modification and pharmacological therapy has had little impact in addressing the problem. The use of bariatric surgery—intragastric balloon and gastric balloon pill—as weight management treatment since the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines were released in 2002, has seen an exponential growth in the number of people having bariatric surgery interventions. This article looks at the prevalence of obesity; definition, indication, and types of weight reduction interventions and care considerations, pre and post procedure.
