Abstract
The impact of job loss can be both psychologically and physically harmful. Research suggests that the anticipation of unemployment and the early period of termination are particularly stressful. Surprisingly little has been written about the planning of lay-offs and the procedures used to inform employees of their dismissal. This article describes some considerations addressed by one company when developing and implementing a small-scale lay-off procedure aimed at facilitating rapid adjustment to the stress of job loss.
