Abstract
This chapter provides a rich compendium of high impact evidence-based factors which will increase the odds of learning when incorporated into experiential exercises for the classroom. First, key classroom-oriented design models of historical significance are examined. Then a prescriptive, procedural model and checklist for developing and implementing experiential learning exercises that addresses the shortcomings of the classroom-oriented design models is presented. This model and checklist are applicable whether using original, borrowed, or adapted experiential exercises in the classroom. The evidence for best practices at each step in the prescriptive model is summarized. The impact of contextual factors on teaching and learning is discussed. Finally, insights and practical recommendations for experiential exercise development and implementation processes is summarized based on the latest theory, research, best practices and authors’ experiences. The limitations of current knowledge are also noted.
