Abstract
The theory of the double layer is extended to obtain an analytical expression for the potential drop across the diffuse layer with consideration of the effects of finite ion size. The classical Gouy-Chapman results are compared with those of the hypernetted chain approximation (HNC) which gives non-analytical results. The HNC results are then used as a guide to the choice of correcting functions in a generalized mean spherical approximation (GMSA). The important quantities in the new description are the volume fraction for the ions and the reciprocal distance characterizing ion-ion interactions in the MSA. The results of the GMSA model are then compared with Monte-Carlo calculations for the case that the ions have a diameter of 300 pm.
