Abstract

The current trend in the process industries is to replace existing panelboards by CRT-based distributed control systems. This change in the operator interface is the most dramatic difference between the old and new control systems and will affect the operation of the process even when there is no change in the control strategy. Failure to properly design the operator interface can negate many advantages of the new control system. This paper discusses the functional differences between traditional panelboard and CRT-based distributed control systems, how these differences can reduce the capabilities of the operators, and techniques for improving the interface.
