Abstract

Lithium is an option for the long-term treatment for bipolar disorder, as it minimizes the risk of recurrences and improves inter-episodic symptomology. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants and other drugs may be used concomitantly with, or instead of, lithium. As lithium has a narrow therapeutic index, careful drug monitoring and individualization of the treatment of bipolar disorder is crucial to improve effectiveness and reduce the risk of adverse events.
