Abstract

Faculty have a long history of involvement in intercollegiate athletics. From the inception of organized collegiate sports in the 1850s, faculty have been concerned that academics not be superseded by athletics — that student‐athletes remain students who represent their institution in athletics competitions. Faculty representatives on athletics committees played an important role in the formation of both athletics conferences and the national governing body for collegiate athletics that eventually became the NCAA.
