Abstract

For many species, population sizes in the wild are extremely small and long-term conservation will require intensive support. Such programmes will probably rely heavily on genetic and reproductive technologies for monitoring and manipulation of genetic material. Using the scimitar-horned oryx Oryx dammah as a case study, this paper reviews the stages in an overall conservation programme at which these technologies might be helpful. -Authors
