Abstract

The demonstration of crossreactive epitopes on the surface of erythrocytes infected with multiple strains of Plasmodium falciparum has raised new hopes for the development of an antimalaria vaccine [Gaiman, B. et al. (2001) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 98, 2664–2669]. The authors focused on a small, Cys-rich, CD36-binding portion of the variant P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (Pf EMP1). Monoclonal antibodies specific for this portion reacted with multiple P. falciparum strains, which was surprising given the variant nature of the entire Pf EMP1 molecule. The results suggest that immune responses specific for the small, functionally crossreactive portion of Pf EMP1 could be important for immunity against malarial infection. SHK
