Abstract

Calculations have been made of the contribution to tektite composition from admixture of meteoritic material assuming an origin for tektites as splash from meteoritic impact. This contribution cannot exceed about 0.1 per cent for chondrites or 0.03 per cent for irons for most tektites. For the groups from Central Java, Billiton, Borneo and South Indochina, with larger nickel and chromium contents, the contribution from a chondritic source will not exceed about 1.3 per cent, or 0.2 per cent for irons. Contributions from achondrites do not produce the observed Cr/Ni ratios. Necessary boundary conditions for the meteoritic splash hypothesis seem to include a near maximum impact velocity and negligible metoritic contamination of the splashed material.
