Abstract

This is the first of a sequence of three articles, which describes the effect of diffusion limitations on rate and on selectivity in heterogeneous consecutive reactions. In particular the effect on selectivity, which the literature mentions in connection with solid catalysis only, has been the subject of detailed studies. A theoretical analysis of gas-liquid reactions predicts that certain conditions of diffusion limitation will bring about a decrease in selectivity. This phenomenon has been verified experimentally by the chlorination reaction of liquid alkanes ( n-decane). The analog computer provided solutions of the diffusion equations for a second-order consecutive reaction proceeding under quasi steady-state conditions.
