Abstract
On November 17, 1890, General Nelson A. Miles, acting under the authority of President Benjamin Harrison to take such steps as may be necessary to suppress an anticipated outbreak of Lakota Ghost Dancers, ordered troops to the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in South Dakota. Over the next two weeks, soldiers from as far away as California were summoned, as the largest concentration of U.S. troops since the Civil War surrounded these and two other Lakota reservations-
