Abstract

Taylor, Thomas N. (U. Illinois, Urbana), and Gilbert A. Leisman. Conostoma kestospermum, a new species of Paleozoic seed from the Middle Pennsylvanian. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(6):574–580. Illus. 1963.—This paper describes a new species of Paleozoic seed which has recently been discovered in coal ball material collected from southern Illinois and southeastern Kansas. Conostoma keslospermum is a small, radially symmetrical seed immediately distinguished by numerous sclerotic bands which girdle its exterior. This form of seed coat elaboration is unique and, together with other morphological features, is used to establish its phylogenetic position with respect to other members in the genus.
