Abstract
Since 2000, the Donor Sibling Registry (DSR) has connected almost 20,000 donor offspring with their half siblings and/or their biological parents. They have been able to create and explore these new relationships, better understand their ancestry and learn about their genetic family’s medical backgrounds. In addition, the DSR has helped to eliminate much of the stigma associated with donor conception. Behind the scenes, but very actively, the DSR’s research, education, and counseling services have been instrumental in creating momentum towards establishing positive reforms around the world. Many of us wonder how we can best serve the needs of the people conceived via egg or sperm donation. To address this, the DSR has conducted research, hearing from thousands of donor offspring to find out what was important to them. Our research along with DSR anecdotal information has given us insight into the needs of all stakeholders. This chapter will discuss the DSR’s work, covering the topics of anonymity, medical and genetic issues, and connecting with close genetic relatives while examining how the reproductive medicine industry might move forward in a more ethical and responsible manner.
