Abstract
Research in the area of outdoor recreation has supplied economists with tools for the economic evaluation of natural resources in recreational use. These tools, developed in response to natural resource management problems, have been applied to measuring benefits of national parks [Clawson 1959], dams [Knetsch 1964], sports fisheries [Brown, Singh and Castle 1965], lakes [Burt and Brewer 1971] and other types of natural resources. Although economists may disagree about some of the particulars of estimating recreational benefits, there is general consensus about what should be measured under ideal conditions.
