Abstract
Congenital syphilis increases in the USA
Highlights
As of July 29, 2021, 2022 infants born in 2020 in the USA have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as having congenital syphilis
“Part of the reason is the erosion in public health activities for sexual health since the mid-2000s,” explained Jeffrey D Klausner, (University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA)
“There has been continued defunding of sexual health services and programmes that includes public health nurses and field staff who follow up on women to see if they’re getting treated”
Summary
As of July 29, 2021, 2022 infants born in 2020 in the USA have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as having congenital syphilis. Rising rates of syphilis is a marker of a failed public health system, Klausner noted.
