Abstract

SYNOPSISThe cartilage in the bronchi of 12 cases of congenital lobar emphysema has been examined using 3 techniques: a) microdissection, b) serial macroscopic slices and c) serial histological sections. The first technique is considered to be the best for it enables the cartilage content of the entire bronchial tree to be clearly seen, and focal or generalised deficiencies can be identified. In all 12 cases the amount of cartilage in the bronchi was significantly less than in normal controls and it is postulated that this deficiency is the fundamental abnormality in congenital lobar emphysema.
