Abstract

Summary Congenital lip sinuses (labial fistulae, lip pits, mucous cysts) occur in the lower lip and are usually associated with cleft lip and palate. This paper reviews the literature, discusses the embryology and possible aetiological factors, and presents 13 cases of lip sinuses. Five of these cases had associated clefts of the lip and/or palate. Twelve of the cases occurred in three families. Pedigrees revealed other members of the families with clefts of the lip and/or palate without lip sinuses. One case had no associated anomalies and a negative family history.
