In light of the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, this third edition of a book that examines violence in the context of American culture has unfortunate new relevance. Its comprehensive review of research is useful for many disciplines. This edition has added discussions of electronic aggression, cyber-bullying, cyberstalking and date rape, as well as expanded treatments of bullying, school and youth violence. It includes sections on child physical and sexual abuse and suicide. In the words of Gellert, a medical doctor in the field of public health, this edition “updates all of the epidemiological, profile, risk factor, situational and outcomes data on the varied forms of interpersonal violence.” The book’s purpose is to provide a one-stop resource for health care, social service, law enforcement and other professionals who work with victims of violence and their families, as well as to give individuals, families and communities the resources they need to understand, cope with and prevent violence.
