Abstract

The proton dipolar couplings obtained from NMR measurements (by Gochin et al. Mol. Phys. 1990, 69, 671) on n-hexane dissolved in a nematic solvent are used to study the extent of fluctuations of the C-C bond torsion angle about its equilibrium values. The analysis suggests an effective range of ±18 o for these fluctuations and the values of E tg =0.68 kcal/mol and O g =±113 o , respectively, for the gauche energy (relative to trans) and the mean torsion angle of the gauche states
