Abstract

An antiserum has been raised to diphenylhydantoin. The major, heterogeneous, antibody populations showed specificity and great affinity to the preferred conformation of the free hapten. Minor subpopulations of lower heterogeneity and affinity showed specificity to non-preferred conformations of the free hapten. The mechanism for the evolution of an antiserum of high affinity for the preferred conformation of this hapten is discussed.
