Abstract

The conformation of polypeptides in helix-coil transition region is not Gaussian. In the present work an interrupted helix model of polypeptide chain is adopted in which random coil parts and rod-like helix parts are connected by universal joints alternately. The second and the fourth moments, and , are calculated. It is found that under certain conditions shallow minima appear in and at the transition region. From both of and the deviation from the Gaussian chain is calculated, and the polypeptide chain in the transition region is shown to have a conformation of swollen Gaussian type.
