Abstract

The crystal structure of trimethylamylose was solved by conformation and packing analysis and by refinement against X-ray fiber data. The unit cell is orthorhombic, space group P212121, with a = 17.24 ± 0.01 Å, b = 8.704 ± 0.009 Å, and c (fiber repeat) = 15.637 ± 0.008 Å, as determined by electron diffraction and fiber X-ray patterns. Two chains with four residues each per fiber repeat are packed in an antiparallel fashion in the unit cell. The conformation of the chain can best be described as an approximate 43 helix with a superimposed twofold screw axis. Two non-identical residues form the asymmetric unit of the space group.
