Abstract

In this paper, a confocal radar system and its advantages especially for the range resolution in FMCW mode is presented. The confocal system offers an additional range information due to the known focus position of the lens system. The confocal system consists of two dielectric lenses like in an optical confocal system. The first lens collimates the radar beams while the second lens focuses the beams to a certain area. As a result, two targets beneath the well-known range resolution of FMCW radars can be separated.
